KANSAS CITY (Feb. 19, 2010)  The 30th anniversary season of the Super Chevy Show series is offering a category that will offer those jaw-dropping glances of a classic car racing down the drag strip.

The Super Chevy Show's Shoebox category will make it possible for those classic Chevys of the past to do more than take a Sunday cruise down Main Street. This year, those classic cars can race down the track against other classic cars.

Virginia Motorsports Park's Bryan Pierce said he is anxious to see the classic cars line up in the staging lanes.

"We wanted to have a category that featured classic American cars," Pierce said. "Watching a classic '57 Chevy rumble down the track is incredible. That big iron car can turn some heads and we wanted to give the owners a place to show off the power of the cars."

The Shoebox class will be a dial-in bracket category. The 16-car field will crown its winner through single elimination racing. The heads-up class is designed to attract sedans, coupes and convertibles built from 1934 to 1962.

"We want this class to be special," Super Chevy Show series General Manager, Tom Kreager, said. "The Shoebox Class will run just after opening ceremonies with our exhibition vehicles. They will have their own purse and awards and we plan to have in-depth coverage of the vehicle and driver because there are some fascinating stories out there."

Kreager said the stories about the drivers and the cars are one reason the class was created – the Super Chevy Show owners wanted to share the history of a storied vehicles and the owners who have cared for them over the years.

"In the past, announcers would venture out of the tower to research car and drivers, learn more about the history of the vehicle and the racing experience of the driver," Kreager said. "This is what we plan to do with the Shoebox Class starting this year. We want to cheer for a great American classic."

Kreager said the goal is to create a racing class that everyone can cheer for.

“Our goal is to develop an exciting new class populated by nostalgia looking vehicles fans can relate to," Kreager said. "We think this will just add to the exciting anniversary season of the Super Chevy Show series. There is already a lot of excitement built for this new class."
